When you start a business everyone talks about their business plan and what the next 5 years will look like.
The reality of my 5 year plan has been more like this:
Year 1: constant ups and downs wondering why you’re doing this and learning a whole lot (sometimes the hard way)
Year 2: using everything you learnt in year 1 year 2 starts to feel like you’re the king of the world. Until those now familar doubts come intothe picture again, but things generally go well and you still learn a lot while having what you consider sone great successes.
Year 3: this is where things get interesting, you fall into a groove, things just happen and it feels great. Then you get bored, you realize you’re the AC/DC of the business world – it’s all the same from here on out – and this would be ok if you didn’t feel so bored and uninterested.
Year 4: time to rethink. You change things up a little and things get more interesting, although revenue initially suffers, mentally you’re at the top of your game and enjoying things again. You end the year excited about what the next year holds.
Year 5: it all comes down to this year – things are going well, you’ve made some changes, are really excited about things and can’t wait…until half way through the year when depression hits again, what now? Now you tweak things to get interested again and by the end of the year things are great again.
This is my 7th year of self-employment and it would seem years 4-5 are like shampoo for me: lather, rinse, repeat. Each time building a little bit more and gaining a little more ground – and let me tell you 2009-2010 are going to be great years!
